Emotions can greatly affect the work habits of students, positively and negatively. In schools, one of counselor’s jobs are to make sure that student’s emotions affect their work positively. Counselors can only help though, if students reach out to them. The American School Counselor Association acknowledges that students in high school “are searching for a place to belong“, which means that students can become distraught and discouraged when they feel left out from a group. This is something that can negatively impact their mental health,which can affect how well they perform in class. Therefore, this is something that school counselors try to help with.
Everyone’s life is different, and we are faced with different sets of challenges. However, higher level classes come with new amounts of stress, anxiety, and worry. School counselors help students so that they can “cope” with trauma.
For students who find themselves slipping in grades after lack of motivation, school counselors are there to help. Their goal is to help motivate students to become
“productive, well-adjusted adults“. After meeting with so many students that say they have trouble with motivation, I have learned that this is an epidemic. It is important for students to meet with school counselors and become more acquainted with them in order to see what measures can be taken to become a more productive student.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that there is only “one school psychologist for every 1,381 students”, according to the Washington Post. This is a shame, because this is close to impossible for one person to handle alone. There is not enough time in the day for one person to help 1,381 people with their mental issues.
There are online services that can help people by speaking to a therapist online whenever necessary, but they cost money. 7 Cups is an example of one of these online services. These online services are not designed for student budgets. Some students don’t have time for jobs, and can’t afford to spend 150 dollars a month on psychiatry. There needs to be an online service similar to 7 Cups, set up for students which is free. The money should either come from taxes, or tuition.
